We are in the “first overshoot day”

Date:

This Monday 8 August, humanity consumed all the resources the planet could renew in a year and will leave on “credit” till 31 December. It’s what the NGO Global Foot print network calculated, revealing that this moment comes earlier each year. For its calculations, Global Footprint takes into consideration carbon imprint, resources consumed for fishing, rearing, crops, construction and water use. An over-consumption equivalent to 1.6 planet per year.

The “Overshoot day”

<p<« Earth overshoot day » “characterizes the first day where people live on credit”, writes Global Footprint and the WWF in an announcement. In 2015, the overshoot Day was in August 13. The date has inevitably moved forward since 1970s, says the NGO. In 1970 it was on 23 December. Ever since the date has not ceased to move forward: 3 November in 1980, 13 October in 1990, 4 October in 2000, 3 September in 2005, 28 August in 2010.

” To provide for our needs we need an equivalent of 1.6 planet per year”, states Global Footprint and WWF.

”The cost of this over-consumption is already visible ; lack of water, desertification, soil erosion, fall in agriculture and fish production, deforestation, extinction of species”, lamented the NGO
